Finding work in Sweden as someone moving from abroad is very doable, but it rewards a deliberate approach. Knowing where the real vacancies are, how much Swedish you need and how Swedish recruitment actually works will save you months of scattered applications.
Where the jobs are listed
Start with the official channels. The Swedish Public Employment Service runs the national job board, Platsbanken, which lists openings across every sector and needs no account to search. Its English-language pages explain how to register and search; see arbetsformedlingen.se. For candidates applying from within the EU and EEA, the EURES network gathers Swedish vacancies alongside practical relocation information. The official country portal sweden.se is a reliable overview of the whole process.
How much Swedish do you really need?
Be honest with yourself here, because it shapes everything. Most advertised jobs in Sweden assume good working Swedish. The clear exceptions are highly qualified roles at large international companies, often in technology, life sciences and engineering, where the working language is English. If your Swedish is limited, target those employers first, and start learning the language in parallel; free municipal courses (SFI, Swedish for immigrants) are widely available.
Immigration and work-permit rules depend on your citizenship and situation and change over time. Always confirm the current requirements with the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) before you rely on them.
Networking is not optional
A large share of Swedish positions are filled through contacts and never widely advertised, the so-called hidden job market. Build a presence on LinkedIn, attend industry meetups, and reach out to people working in your field for a short informational chat. Swedes respond well to genuine, low-pressure approaches. Many cities also have networks and mentoring programmes specifically for international professionals.
Match your search to the demand
Some professions are in short supply and actively recruit from abroad; others are crowded. Researching where the demand is can dramatically improve your odds. Our sister site Allayrken.se profiles more than 7,000 Swedish occupations with salary and future-outlook data, which helps you aim at fields that are hiring.
Then apply the Swedish way
Once you have targets, present yourself in the format local recruiters expect. Work through our guides to the Swedish CV, the personal letter and the Swedish interview. When an offer arrives, our guide to understanding your employment contract helps you read it with confidence.
